Skiddaw House

English Hostels, Bunkhouses and Camping Barns

At 1550 feet, Skiddaw House is the highest YHA affiliated hostel in Britain.

A former shooting lodge and shepherd’s bothy on the Cumbria Way, it is an ideal base for exploring the little used and quiet northern fells.

This is a remote and isolated place in which to reflect on the wilderness, with no sign of the 21st Century in any direction.

With no electricity, phones ringing or TV to distract from the vista of a clear unpolluted starry night.

This is simple accommodation with log and coal fires the only heating.

No noise pollution from traffic as the nearest road is 3½ miles away, yet only an hour or so’s walk from civilisation.

Walkers and cyclists are advised to bring a map and torch.

Campers welcome.

Skiddaw House is now powered by the sun. We have got photovoltaic cells linked to our bank of batteries, so we will no longer need to relie on the generator. We also have a big thermal solar panel, to heat the water.
